Membership Dues: A Pretend Dialogue (adapted from the bulletin of KAM Isaiah Israel, Chicago)

Member: What do I get for my dues?
NVHC: Lots.
Member: Lots of what?
NVHC: Well for starters, you get High Holy Day tickets.
Member: I can purchase those for a lot less than membership.
NVHC: You can come to services, lectures, classes, etc.
Member: So can anyone in the community.
NVHC: You can send your kids to our religious school.
Member: My kids are in college already.
NVHC: You get all of the synagogue mailings.
Member: Last month the Newsletter was late; the month before, I got two!
NVHC: You get the services of the rabbi when you need her.
Member: I can always find a rent-a-rabbi if I need one.
NVHC: You get to contribute to the synagogue.
Member: You mean that by paying dues I earn the right to be asked to give time and more money to the synagogue?
NVHC: We mean that by being a member you have contributed, and can continue to contribute to the Jewish community. You can ensure that the congregation that has been here for the Jews of Western Fairfax County continues to be here. You can ensure that there is a rabbi here to serve the needs of the congregation and the larger community, a magnificent volunteer choir, a superb school in which generations of our children will learn about our history and values. You can be sure that there is a strong Jewish presence in the greater community.
Member: But what do I get?
NVHC: That's the best part. You get whatever you want, because what you really get is what you take from the congregation. You can be part of our community, a leader of our community; you can learn with us, teach us, sing with us, pray with us; you can debate with us, you can share with us, you can look to us for support in your times of need. You can come to synagogue once a year or every week ... you can do what you will. But by staying a member, you will make sure that we will always be here when you - and others - are ready for us.
